Oli has a long illustrious history. It started as a 4 hour service in 1936 and became a full fledged 24 hour
station in 2001.

Here are some of the milestones in it's history:
1st June 1936
Indian Radio started transmission for about four hours as part of the British Malaya Broadcasting Corporation.
1959
The name of the corporation was changed to Radio Singapore.
August 1965
Station was renamed Indian Services of Radio Television Singapore
(RTS).

1980
RTS became a statutory board called Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC).
1982
Indian Station of Singapore was named Radio 4.
1992
Radio 4 was renamed Olikkalanjiam.

1994
SBC was corporatised with radio as a separate entity known as Radio Corporation of Singapore (RCS).

14 April 1997
The name of the station was shortened to Oli 96.8FM.
May 1998
Oli's first book 'Arivoma Naam' was published.
4 Jul 1998
Oli received its first Charity Award in New York for its donation drive for Sree Narayana Mission Home For The Aged Sick .$250, 000 was donated.

16 October 2000
Oli 96.8FM's revamped website launched. Live streaming listened to in over 60 countries.

21 June 2001
International Honours for Oli 96.8FM! It was awarded the prestigious WorldMedal for Community Service in the annual New York Festivals. This was in recognition for it's record-breaking fund-raising effort for the earthquake victims of Gujarat. S$2.6 million was raised in 3 weeks.
10 August 2001
Historic occasion for Oli 96.8FM. It launched 24 hour, fully manned transmission.

22 Feb 2002
Oli 96.8 FM was awarded the PRISM (Public Service in the Service of Mankind) award by IPRS (Institute of Public Relations of Singapore) for the Gujarat Fund Raiser.

26 May 2002
Another milestone for Oli. It took part for the first time in Pradhana Vizha - which usually honours the best TV talents. The Most Popular DJ award went to Mohd Rafi, while the Most Popular Programme award was snapped up by Azhagiya Pandiyan's Varalaatril Indru.

10-11 August 2002
Oli succeeded in what other stations have not even attempted - doing an event non-stop for 24 hours to commemorate the first anniversary of Oli going 24 hours. About 7000 listeners turned up at Sentosa to wish Oli well. We re-launched our website too.

9 November 2002
Oli's first Charity Dinner & Dance. Our on-air appeals raised about $60 000 in just 2 weeks for Sinda's Project Give. The second Charity D&D on 1st Nov 2003 raised $32 000.
9 December 2002
Oli's first business venture. Oli & CL AV International partnered to open up a CD retail outlet at 180, Serangoon Road. India's music sensation, Isai Puyal A R Rahman graced the launch of the outlet.
30 March 2003
Launch of the hugely successful radio work, Varalaatril Indru as a book. First print of 3000 copies sold out within 3 weeks. A reprint of another 300 copies were sold within a week. 400 listeners attended the launch at Amara Hotel.

9-10 August 2003
To commemorate Oli's 2nd anniversary of 24 hour broadcast, joined hands with National Library Board to organize Singapore's first 24 hour Reading Round the Island (RRI) event. We also organized a massive blood donation drive on 10th August 2003, a first for Oli. A total of 212 pints of blood was collected. (This event was voted the best MediaCorp Radio station promotion for the six months April-Sep 2003).
10 August 2003
Launched "Oliyudan Thamizhil", a unique initiative which allows listeners to email in TAMIL directly to Oli DJs - a world-first. 10 000 free CDs were distributed to public.
5 March 2004
Oli 96.8FM won it's second PRISM (Public Service in the Service of Mankind) award. This time, IPRS (Institute of Public Relations of Singapore) honoured us for the 24 hour Reading Round the Island (RRI) event we did together with NLB.
30 Dec 04 - 02 Jan 05

Oli and Vasantham central initiated a charity drive at Campbell Lane to raise funds for Tsunami victims. With Lisha's and several other Indian organization's support, a sum of $426 000 was raised for Singapore Red Cross Society over the 4 day period. Oli also observed, for the first time in its history, a minute of silence in honour of Tsunami victims at 12 midnight, 31st Dec 2004.

15 January 2005

Launched on Thai Ponggal day, a world first -Tamil SMS - with technology from Murasu Anjal's founder Muthu Nedumaran. Prior to this, only picture messaging was available in Tamil. Kavi Perarasu Vairamuthu graced the occasion by delivering a keynote speech and coining the first tamil sms - "Netru Varai Moondru Thamizh; Indru Muthal Naangu Thamizh. Itho Kai Tholai Pesiyil Kaninith Thamizh".
